We think Open Wheel Midget Racing is the best show in racing. Period. We also think the racing for purses that vary anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand bucks with an engine that costs over $40K to buy and requires a $6K to $10K rebuild every 8 to 10 races is . . . . . good for the engine builders but not so good for our sport. Diminishing car counts at the local, regional and national level illustrate our point. If we have learned anything from the Focus series, it is that a DOHC engine will last a long time in a midget racecar. A really long time . . . . like a couple years for some. Hmmmm? Wonder what would happen if we took the DOHC Honda S2000 F20C engine and put a little tuner mojo on it and bolted it in a midget? Hmmmm, indeed. The PBH Indy F20C Twin Cam Honda Midget Engine is based upon the 2-Liter Honda F20C used to power the Honda S2000 2-Seat Sports Roadster. The F20C engine won the "International Engine of the Year" award in the 1.8 to 2.0 litre catagory for five years from 2000 through 2004. It's Honda's latest example of applying it's F1 heritage to the street. The F20C pumps out 240 HP @ 8300 RPM and 153 Ft. Lbs. of torque @ 7,500 rpm in EPA trim. The EPA version hits the rev-limiter at 9000 RPM and it's engineered to withstand a couple hundred thousand miles of abuse. And now that some of the more restrictive CID limitations imposed by some of the nations midget racing sanctioning bodies are being relaxed, we can bring the "K" Series engines to the party. Hmmm, indeed. An ever growing number of America’s top performance equipment manufacturers see the Twin Cam Honda Midget engine as perhaps part of the answer to the future of Midget Racing both in terms of cost and performance. If we were to use the example set by the Ford Focus Midget Engine, the PBH Indy Twin Cam Midget Engine should be able to run a 40 race season on a couple of sets of valve springs or about $500.00. When high performance icon Bruce Crower built an engine for his granddaughter’s Western States USAC Midget , he chose the F20C Honda engine as it’s foundation because it was lighter, lower, shorter, inexpensive to run, easy to work on and had the potential of making a load of HP. The PBH Indy Honda "F" & "K" Full Midget Engines from Air Cleaners to Drive Yoke will cost a little over $27,000.00 ready to bolt in your car. It is inexpensive to run. A set of $350.00 valve springs every 30 races of so. It makes competitive power. Who knows, it might get a few of those rollers with blown engines back on the race track if the owners see they are able to afford running them. How does the PBH Indy engine run? It's fast. It's reliable. There have been no failures attributable to any major component in better than 2000 laps of both racing and testing. It's Affordable. About $27,000 installed for the USAC version. In fact, a couple of santioning bodies have concluded that maybe these DOHC "F" & "K" Series Honda engines might be good for the sport and have allowed us the displacement to be very competitve. Honda technology and good ol' grassroots ingenuity. Shoud be pretty good. |
